public education

of the Colony.

I have ...

We have received a very satisfactory Report on the state of Public Education in the Colony, of which we now publish the Statistics, and consider great praise is due to Mr Lobscheid, the Inspector of the Government Schools, under whose guidance so much has been done to promote the instruction of the Chinese population. It will be observed that the Government grant, which down to 1850 was only £75 a-year, has been augmented to £1,500 for 1859. There is reason to believe that the Census for this year will not be less than 90,000. English is taught in the following schools - Tai-ping-slan, West Point, Sheung-wan, Chung-wan, Bowrington, Wong-nei-chung, Tang lung chau. Where there are two schools in one place, one is for the Punti, and the other for the Hakka, dialect:

Years Government Grant Population Attendance at Schools 1848 £75 21,514 96 1849 75 29,507 90 1850 75 33,292 114 1851 110 32,983 111 1852 125 37,058 114 1853 125 39,017 112 1854 125 56,011 102 1855 135 72,925 153 1856 212.10 71,730 167 1857 275 77,091 420 1858 915 75,503 557 1859 1,500 90,000 * 813

*Probable estimate.
